Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazards of amputation and severe lacerations from saws automatically restarting upon restoration of power after a power interruption. (a) Location - Front End of the Fish Processing Area: On or about 11/07/97, the # 8 Butcher Boy Electric Meat, Fish and Bone Cutting Machine, serial # 6-21814, was not equipped with a working magnetic motor start, exposing employees to the hazards created by a saw automatically starting upon restoration of power after a power interruption. (b) Location - Front End of the Fish Processing Area: On or about 11/07/97, the # 7 Butcher Boy Electric Meat, Fish and Bone Cutting Machine, serial # 6-21811, was not equipped with a working magnetic motor start, exposing employees to the hazards created by a saw automatically starting upon restoration of power after a power interruption. (c) Location - Front End of the Fish Processing Area: On or about 02/03/98, the # 9 Butcher Boy Electric Meat, Fish and Bone Cutting Machine, serial # 6-21880, was not equipped with a working magnetic motor start, exposing employees to the hazards created by a saw automatically starting upon restoration of power after a power interruption. (d) Location - Front End of the Fish Processing Area: On or about 02/03/98, the # 6 Butcher Boy Electric Meat, Fish and Bone Cutting Machine, serial # 6-21882, was not equipped with a working magnetic motor start, exposing employees to the hazards created by a saw automatically starting upon restoration of power after a power interruption. (e) Location - Front End of the Fish Processing Area: On or about 02/10/98, the # 3 Butcher Boy Electric Meat, Fish and Bone Cutting Machine, serial # 6-22662, was not equipped with a working magnetic motor start, exposing employees to the hazards created by a saw automatically starting upon restoration of power after a power interruption. (f) Location - Front End of the Fish Processing Area: On or about 11/30/97, the # 5 Butcher Boy Electric Meat, Fish and Bone Cutting Machine, serial # 6-22550, was not equipped with a working magnetic motor start, exposing employees to the hazards created by a saw automatically starting upon restoration of power after a power interruption. (g) Location - Rear of building/Large Maintenance Room: On or about 11/30/97 and 01/30/97, the Horizonal/vertical Band Saw, Mfg- Central Machinery, Model T063; serial # 10080, was not equipped with a magnetic motor start, exposing employees to the hazards created by a saw automatically starting upon restoration of power after a power interruption. Among other methods, feasible abatement methods include: Install new magnetic motor start safety switches on all saws or repair the ones that came as original equipment on the meat cutting saws.
