Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by a defective lifting device: a) 140 inch mill - written periodic inspection recoreds were not maintained for Hill Acme slab tongs number 56 used to lift steel plates. Observed 10/16/89 Abatement Note: A feasible and useful method to correct this hazard among other methods is to maintain written records for all inspections made to lifting devices.
