Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Basement First and Second Elevator Floor Levels The wooden manually operated vertically slidding gate of the plants' freight elevator, was not interlocked with the elevators' drive mechanism, preventing the elevator from ascending or descending unless the gate enclosure is in place. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard, is to: 1) Equip the elevator gate with hoistway-unit interlocking system, which would prevent the elevator from moving, unless the gate is in the down position. 2) The hoistway unit system shall interlock the gate in a close position before the elevator ascends or descends to another level.
