Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: A. BEING STRUCK AND/OR CRUSHED BY FALLING STEEL PLATES AND OTHER STEEL PIECES WHEN OVERHEAD CRANES WERE LOADED BEYOND THEIR RATED CAPACITY. THE STEEL WAS BEING LIFTED BY TWO UNDERHUNG CRANES WITH RATINGS OF 5-TONS EACH AND SOME OF THE PIECES MOVED BY THESE TWO CRANES WERE MEASURED AND FOUND TO WEIGH IN EXCESS OF THE 10-TON TOTAL RATING FOR THE TWO CRANES. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO INSURE THAT PIECES AND EQUIPMENT LIFTED BY THE CRANES DO NOT EXCEED THE 10-TON RATING.
