29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. a) Signature Cabinetry located at 1285 Alum Creek Drive, COLUMBUS, OH 43209: On and preceding August 23, 2022, employees were exposed to machine hazards associated with moving parts, scattering fragments and an 18 inch circular saw blade point of operation during stone cutting cycles on a GMM Extra CNC stone saw. Operators and other employees perform work in the slab cutting area where granite/quartz slabs are cut which includes monitoring of the cuts and material exchanges are performed on the GMM Extra CNC stone saw. The folding barrier was not being utilized on the front side of the CNC saw to prevent scattering fragments of material from striking employees and to prevent entry into the machine area during operation. Additionally, no operational presence sensing devices were installed on the machine to cease cutting in the event the machine area were entered for minor adjustments or to remove scrap material during operation. The following condition exposed employees to caught-in and struck-by hazards.
