29 CFR 1926.651(i)(1): Where the stability of adjoining buildings, walls, or other structures was endangered by excavation operations, support systems such as shoring, bracing or underpinning was not provided to ensure the stability of such structures for the protection of employees: a) Jobsite, 208 & 210 Country Drive, Belle Vernon, PA: On May 22, 2017, a French drain was uncovered while excavating for the installation of a new storm sewer, was not supported, the previously disturbed soil surrounding it became loose and fell down into the trench along with other soil from that side of the trench, resulting in the trench collapse. There also were landscaping rocks on the edge of the excavation, directly above the area where the French drain was located, adding additional weight to the side of the trench. No measures were taken to shore, brace or support this area.
