29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc. Machine guarding was not provided to protect operator(s) and other employees from hazard(s) created by the following machines: a. Waterbury #10 Roll Threader AD-99-043- The ER did not provide adequate guards to prevent employees from coming into contact with moving parts of the machine during operation. This exposes employees to a struck by hazard. b. Four Slide #AD70-071- The machine had moving parts that were not guarded to prevent employees from struck by or caught-in hazards from the moving parts of the machine. c. Four Slide #AD70-091- U.S. Baird S/N 188 Model #35. The safety switch on the safety door was bypassed which allowed the machine to operate while the door was open. This exposed employees to struck by, and caught-in hazards. d. Staple Machine #AD-99-050. There is no guarding in place to prevent the employees from gaining access to the machine during operation. This exposed employees to struck by hazards. e. U.S. Baird AD-70-2084- The guarding in place is not effective to ensure that the employees can not gain access to the moving parts of the machine when it is in operation. f. U.S. Baird AD-70-042 RWI Slide- Rotating parts were not guarded to prevent employees from graining access.
