Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: DUST&FUMES
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to potential flash fires and explosions while collecting the explosive aluminum fines from the baghouse and the tumbler area: (a)Melt Area, Baghouse and Tumbler Dust Collection Areas - Employees were not trained in the hazards associated with the collection of explosive fines. The process of collection of the aluminum fines has been performed for eight years; however, the procedures for the process have not been reviewed and/or inspected on a regular basis to determine that employees were utilizing safe work practices. Additionally, training and procedures for the hazards associated with combustible aluminium fines, including the handling clothing fires, have not been established, on or about March 6, 2006. "AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IN ACCORDANCE WITH NFPA 484, COMBUSTIBLE METALS, METAL POWDERS, AND METAL DUSTS, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, SECTION 4.5.6. EMPLOYEE TRAINING PROGRAM; SECTION 4.6.2.4.1 CLOTHING FIRES, AND SECTION 4.6.4 SAFETY INSPECTION OF THE NFPA STANDARD" VERIFICATION REQUIRED
