Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CRUSHING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to; crushing hazard because of bumps and obstacles in the area. (a)PennDOT Building on Front and Sycamore Streets, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17101 Two (2) employees working in a hydraulic boom supported elevated work platform, approximately thirty (35) feet high, which did not have the ground area cleared of bumps and obstacles in the work area. A beam with a six (6) inch flange and thirty (30) feet long was lying on the ground in front of the steering wheels and had been run over by the equipment, as occurred on April 18, 1996. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is for employees to inspect and clear the operating area of bumps and hazards prior to operating in the area.
