Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: (a) In the main elevator, employees were exposed to a potential fall hazard while operating the electric manlift due to the lack of an interlocking switch on the elevator car entrance door and the door at the first floor landing. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to install an interlocking switch on the elevator car that would inactivate the passenger elevator when the door is opened, and to install an interlocking switch on the entrance door on the first floor landing to prevent it from opening while the car is away from the landing. (b) In the main elevator, employees were exposed to a crushing hazard while working near the electric passenger elevator due to the lack of an interlocking switch on the entrance door in front of the manlift. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to install an interlocking switch on the entrance door to prevent it from opening while the electric car is in operation.ng
