Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to burns from accidental contact with steam and hot water pipes. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to insulate or barricade hot pipes and fittings which will reduce or eliminate the likelihood of contact with hot pipes: In the following instances hot condensate and water pipes were not insulated: a) No. 15PM, 2nd Floor Storage Area - The hot condensate pipe on the PK Compact 400 hot water heater was not adequately guarded. b) No. 15PM, No. 26 Supercalender - The flexible hot water line adjacent to platform at south end control room was not insulated. c) No. 15PM, Finishing, Farrell Pit Room - There was a 24" section of pipe at the condensate pump and a vertical run of pipe adjacent to the stairs that were not insulated. d) No. 1 Water Plant West End - The steam lines to the Trane heater were not insulated.
