Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the falling rig mast or anything that might not be secured in place in the mast. On Rig #11; an employee was allowed to go under the mast of the rig while the mast was still suspended in the air to move a boom pole to prevent it from digging into the ground as the mast was being lowered onto the headache rack. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable abatement method is to require all rig hands not required to carry out the operation to remain outside of the lowering mast until it is seated on the headache
