Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: LIFTING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by or struck against objects under excessive wind conditions. a)Job Site - Queensboro Bridge, New York, NY: The employer failed to heed platform design specification notes prohibiting the lifting of platforms by crane(s) for installation to the underside of the bridge in excessive wind conditions. The platform was lifted in winds that peaked at 32 knots, or 36.864 miles per hour, The engineering design drawing notes cautioned against lifting the platforms in winds in excess of 20 miles per hour.The lift occurred on September 29, 1997. ABATEMENT: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to adhere to design specifications. ABATEMENT VERIFICATION IS REQUIRED THIS ITEM. FAILURE TO COMPLY WILL RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL PENALTY OF $1000.00, AS PER 29 CFR 1903.19.,
