Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) The joystick-type controller on the remote control box for the Webb drill was not of a design which protected it from unintentional operation. Webb drill operators using the remote control box for setup work were exposed to being struck by the moving drill head carrier in the event that the joystick-type controller unexpectedly moved out of the neutral position. One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct this hazard is to modify or replace the existing joysticktype controller with a recessed control button or other type that is free from the probability of accidental operation as prescribed in Section 3.4.1.2 of ANSI B11.8-1983, entitled American National Standard for Machine Tools - Drilling, Milling, and Boring Machines - Safety Requirements for Construction, Care, and Use.
