Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CAUGHT
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occaptional Safety and Health act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employee, in that, employees were exposed to the hazards of having part of their body caught between the moving elevator and the hoistway. A fesible and useful method to correct this hazard, among other methods, is the installation of elevator car doors or gates that woul d prevent employees from having any part of their body outside the periphery of the elevator car unless the elevator car is within the landing zone and that were electrically interlocked to prevent the elevator car from moving unless the elevator car doors or gates are in the closed position: NORTH MILL BUILDING: THE 8,OOOLB. CAPACITY FREIGHT ELEVATOR DID NOT PREVEN T EMPLOYEES FROM HAVING A PART OF THEIR BODY OUTSIDE THE CAR OF THE ELEVATOR WHEN IT WAS IN OPERATION. THE CAR GATES ON THE LOADING DOCK AND FINISHING ROOM SIDES OF THE CAR HAD SLATS MISSING THAT COULD HAVE ALLOWED A FOOT OR OTHER PART OF THE BODY BEING ACCIDENTALLY OUTSIDE THE CAR.
