Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 002 Hazard: CONFINED
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to potential hazards of oxygen deficiency or toxic gases in a confined space because employees were not instructed in the nature of the hazards necessary precautions, and use of protective and emergency equipment. a) Tank Building - Employees storing, transferring, and/or inspecting cable in the tanks were exposed to hazards associated with confined spaces. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to set up and follow a confined space entry procedure that would insure a safe and healthful workplace for the employees. ABATEMENT NOTE: See "Working in Confined Space" (NIOSH Publication No. 80-106) for guidance.
