29 CFR 1910.37(a)(3): Exit routes must be free and unobstructed. No materials or equipment may be placed, either permanently or temporarily, within the exit route. The exit access must not go through a room that can be locked, such as a bathroom, to reach an exit or exit discharge, nor may it lead into a dead-end corridor. Stairs or a ramp must be provided where the exit route is not substantially level. a) GEA/FES engine room, Bay Door #13, Door Labeled as an Exit: The exit leading to the outside of the facility contained a locked folding security gate which blocked the egress from the facility, on or about 10/10/2017. b) Roof: Exit routes were obstructed by pipe chases located in the attic. Employees had to travel under pipe chases and crossbeams which were located in the path of travel to the exit. There was no clear path of travel to the exit door, on or about 10/10/2017. NOTE: THE EMPLOYER IS REQUIRED TO SUBMIT ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION FOR THIS ITEM, FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN AN ADDITIONAL PENALTY OF $1000.00 AS PER 29 CFR 1903.19.
