Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a potential amputation hazard or other injury: (a) For employees operating the freight elevator and exposed to a potential for injury where the elevator operating controls on the car and each landing were of the type for use with a garage door and marked open/close rather than up/down for elevator use. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install operating controls on the elevator car and at each landing that are designed for use with freight elevators. This company was previously cited for a violation of this Occupational Safety and Health standard or its equivalent standard which was contained in OSHA Inspection Number 102763000, Citation Number 1, Item Number 2B, issued on 04/12/2002.
