Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falling debris: Facility: On, or about, January 18, 2011, a member of the snow removal crew suffered serious injuries when he was struck by snow/ice debris that had slid down the inflatable dome during inclement weather. Adequate precautions had not been taken by the company to protect the workers from being struck by snow/ice debris that dislodged from the top of the inflatable structure. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: 1.Provide a spotter to watch the upper portions of the dome if snow removal operations must be carried out with snow/ice located on the upper portion of the inflatable structure. 2.Ensure all snow removal workers have been adequately trained regarding safe work practices during snow removal. At a minimum, all workers should be aware of what "falling debris" signals will be given and what action is required when a signal is given in order to avoid being struck by debris.
