Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed by a vehicle: a.On or about April 7, 2009, at the north side of the facility, an employee was working on removing the engine of a 1995 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight, and did not properly support the elevated vehicle while working underneath the vehicle. The employee used a single jack stand to support the weight of the vehicle under which he was working. The jack stand became displaced, and the vehicle fell on the employee. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement to correct this hazard would be to follow industry practice, the manufacturer's operation manual and warning labels to utilize a pair of matching jack stands to support one end of the elevated vehicle and to provide training on the safe use of the equipment. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION ARE REQUIRED.
