Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards: At the establishment located at 5907 Clinton St., Boise, ID: On or about May 10, 2007, and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to fall hazards of approximately 4 to 18 feet when allowed to climb the storage racks to retrieve product without the benefit of fall protection. At the establishment located at 5907 Clinton St., Boise, ID: On or about May 10, 2007, and at times prior thereto, employees were exposed to fall hazards of approximately 4 to 18 feet when lifted on the open forks, or on a pallet, of a forklift. The pallet was not equipped with a means of fall protection, was not adequately secured to the lifting carriage or forks, did not contain a slip resistant floor surface, and its loading capabilities/limits were unknown. Note: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to use operating techniques and a platform meeting the requirements of the "American National Standards Institute" ASME/ANSI B56.1-2000, Safety standards for Low-Lift and High-Lift Trucks; sections 4.17 "Elevating Personnel", and 7.36 "Platforms - Elevating". Note: Abatement certification and supporting documentation are required for this item.
