Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to struck-by hazards: a)On or about 03/01/06, Enbridge Tie-In, employees were exposed to being struck-by steel piping during the de-watering, using nitrogen gas, of a newly constructed natural gas pipeline. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to secure the "pot" with a clamp in accordance with the Department of the Army, US Army Corps of Engineers, Safety and Health Requirements Manual, EM 385-1-1, Section 20.A.16. and American National Standards Institute - B31.1-1973, Power Piping, Section 121.2.1. Both of which are referenced in OSHA's Safety and Health Information Bulletin, SHIB 06-21-2004, which recognizes lack of anchoring as a hazard associated with de-watering of pipelines.
