Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Employees working in the vicinity of loads lifted with "C hook" below the hook lifting devices at the Steel Dock in Building 14, in department 162 at post AX67, and department 126 at post E73, were exposed to the hazard of being struck by falling loads due to the potential of overloading C hooks that were not marked with their rated capacity, or overloading cranes or hoists due to not figuring the weight of the C hook and its load into the total weight lifted with the crane or hoist. In some cases hooks were available for use without their weight marked on the device so that the total load could be calculated, or in other cases, the weight marked on the hook was not being figured into the total weight of the lift. Among others, feasible and acceptable means to correct this hazard would be to mark and use "C hooks" in compliance with ANSI B30.20, the American National Standard for Below-The- Hook Lifting Devices.
