Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards: a)Canter Area-Saw Mill Side: The employer allowed employees to work on the top of a machine and attach their lanyards to the hoisting ropes of the Acco-Wright 3 ton Electric Hoist (Model Number ID TL-014; SN 532-07-6340) for use as a fall protection anchorage point. The hoist ropes were not appropriate to support the load and the 10,000 pound anchorage that was required by two employees was not obtained by use of the hoist. Feasible methods include, but are not limited to: providing an appropriate anchorage point for the employees; or by erecting a scaffold with standard guardrails on all open sides.
