Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fall hazard from the top of trailer: a.On or about December 8, 2005, the employer failed to take steps to ensure that no employee stood on the top of the trailer to remove the excess shavings from the tarp without fall protection, exposing the employee to a fall hazard of at least 12.5 feet. Among other methods, some feasible means of abatement would be: 1.Develop and enforce a policy prohibiting access to tops of trailers. 2.Use fall protection, including, but not limited to providing catwalks with guard rails, or harness and lanyard that are properly secured. 3.Install an air blower, similar to an auto car wash, to blow excess material from the tops of trailers. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION AND DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED.
