Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: LIFTING

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the recognized hazard of struck-by while improperly lifting and moving the trench boxes with an excavator: The employer failed to ensure that equipment operators followed manufacturer's directions when handling and moving trench boxes when such trench boxes were lifted without the use of a four-legged sling, causing stress to the trench box retainer pins. Such stress could compromise the integrity of the retainer pins and trench box, exposing employees to possible trench box collapse and failure. Among other methods, recognized and feasible means of abatement to correct this hazard include, but are not limited to, full implementation of the written and pictorial direction contained in the owner's manual of the Griswold Machine and Engineering, Inc. trench box.
