Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: UNAPEQUIP
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to an injection hazard while operating high pressure cleaning equipment: (A)Job Site: On May 25, 2004, and at times prior thereto, the Landa Pressure Washer, Model PG4-3500, was not equipped with an extension wand or lance. The pressure washer operated at 13 horse power and 3500 pounds per square inch of water pressure at the nozzle, thereby exposing the workers to an injection hazard. ABATEMENT NOTE: Amongst other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to require a lance or wand having the trigger mechanism located at least four feet from the discharge nozzle as required by UL 1776, High-Pressure Cleaning Machines. The trigger mechanism may be located less than 48 inches from the discharge nozzle if it can be demonstrated that a shorter length does not present a risk of skin injection. The Landa Pressure Washer distributor recommends and equips the washers with 36 inch wands. Note: Abatement certification required for this item.
