Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: BURNS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being severely burned due to inadequacies in the design and construction of the spray room: (a)Spray Room: On May 13, 2004, and at times prior thereto, employee(s) sprayed Valtec self-seal precat 20 sheen lacquer in a spray room that was constructed out of chip board material. (b)Spray Room: On May 13, 2004, and at times prior thereto, employee(s) sprayed Valtec self-seal precat 20 sheen lacquer in a spray room that was not equipped with a noncombustible fire door with shutters. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the design and construction requirements set forth in the American National Standards Institute Z9.3 section 5.1 and section 5.2. Common materials include concrete, zinc sheet metal, aluminum sheet metal, zinc coated iron, or nonflammable mastics. Materials used must be both substantially noncombustible and easily cleanable. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item.
