Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to overhead spills and crushing hazards from a skid steer loader. (a)On December 3, 2003 an employee, at the St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center job site, was operating a loader in an unsafe manner, i.e. contrary to the instructions found in the " CAT 246 Skid Steer Loader Operation and Maintenance Manual". It was observed that the machine did not evidence good stability while traveling over inclines, furthermore employees on the job site were exposed to overhead hazards because the work tool, a dirt bucket, was carried in an elevated position. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct these hazards are the following : a) obtain and read the Operating Techniques section of the "CAT 246 Skid Steer Loader Operation and Maintenance Manual", b) obtain and review the Associated Equipment Distributors, Inc. "Skid Steer Loaders Safety Video & Manual".
