Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: EXPLOSION
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were not trained in the safe use and operating procedures of torches. An employee was not trained in the safe use and operation of hand-held propane torch. A battery exploded when venting vapors came into contact with the torch being used approximately 1 foot away. Among feasible means of abatement would be to comply with ANSI Z49.1-1988, Safety in Welding and Cutting, Sections 3.2.1.1 & 3.2.1.2
