Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: falling a distance of up to 230 feet. Location: Gateway Building, 1 No. Lexington Ave. On or about: 8/22/00 a) The employer did not provide two employees engaged in window washing from a two point suspended working platform (Mnfg: Spider) with independent vertical lifelines. The lifeline for each employee was tied off to the portion of the powered platform that was on the roof. AMONG OTHER METHODS ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: (1) Follow the safety procedures in the Spider Engineered Systems Group manual entitled 'Access Solutions' which states: Every worker on a powered platform must wear fall protection equipment. Independent safety lines must be used as a part of this system unless the platform is supported by four wire rope lines. NOTE: Because abatement of this violation is already documented in the inspection case file, the employer need not submit certification or documentation of abatement of this violation as normally required by 29 CFR 1903.19.
