Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: LIFTING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: falling approximately 22 feet from a wooden pallet. Location: chimney area, Lot 19 Divot Place On or about: 7/19/00 a) Two employees were installing exterior wall sheathing in the chimney area. The employees were working from a wooden pallet that was not secured or fastened to the lifting forks of the Lull High Lander II # 644 forklift. AMONG OTHER METHODS ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THE HAZARD IS: (1) Follow the safety procedures in ANSI B56.1.1975 section 427 A to D and 513 A to B American National Standard for Low Lift and High Lift Trucks. (2) Secure the work platform (wooden pallet) to the lifting forks before it is elevated. NOTE: Because abatement of this violation is already documented in the inspection case file, the employer need not submit certification or documentation of abatement of this violation as normally required by 29 CFR 1903.19.
