Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling due to stair failure: (a)Potato Peeling Area - The stairs were not constructed properly to prevent collapse. The metal grated treads were welded directly to the metal stringers, without securing them to end plates welded to the grating treads and bolted to the stringer, or by welding or bolting carrier bars to the stringers for tread support. "AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO DESIGN AND CONSTRUCT STAIRS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE METAL STAIRS MANUAL (AMP 510-92), PUBLISHED BY THE ARCHITECTURAL METAL PRODUCTS DIVISION OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ARCHITECTURAL METAL MANUFACTURES." Note: Abatement certification required for this item.
