Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer failed to furnish a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: a. On or about April 29, 1999 employees working at Wespark Blvd. & Strawflower Court in the Wespark subdivision of Romeoville, IL were exposed to the hazards of fire and explosion when a 4 inch natural gas line was struck during directional boring operations.The same boring path also passed directly atop a 2 inch gas line prior to the 4 inch line being struck. The exact location of these gas lines at those points where the boring rod could possibly come in contact had not been exposed by hand digging as recommended by OSHA Subpart P - Excavation Standards as well as the Vermeer Navigator operator's manual.
