Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard:
29 CFR 1926.858(d): During demolition operations the employer did not ensure that any structural member being dismembered shall not be overstressed: a) During demolition of the two story building on 3-21 a large crack developed in one of the three main steel beams (B girder) which support the 2fl. The crack was at a weak point in the girder known as a splice connection which became overstressed when part of the girder was cut off. Though the splice connection itself was not visible due to concrete encasing and was not shown on the demolition plan, the large crack was in plain view and the girder beam was visibly sagging in danger of collapse. Employees were exposed to structural collapse hazard.
