Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to reproductive health hazards when working with hazarouds drugs: a.On or about August 28, 2002, 202 SW 17th Street, Ocala, FL, in the hormone room employees were exposed to impairment of their reproductive health when transferring, weighing, and mixing powders of hazardous drugs at work stations where an appropriate containment device such as a biological safety cabinet was not used. The hood provided for use was not evaluated for its performance. Employees worked with hazardous drugs which included but were not limited to estradiol and diethylstilbestrol. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to follow the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists Technical Assistance Bulletin, 29 CFR 1910.1450, or the OSHA Technical Manual (TED 1.15) Section V: Chapter 3 Controlling Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Drugs, and develop a hazardous drug safety and health plan (chemical hygiene plan) which ensures that appropriate engineering controls are determined and used, that specific measures are developed to ensure adequate performance of ventilation systems, and that cleaning and decontamination of surfaces is done after completion of procedures and immediately after any spill of material. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED.TION
