Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard:
OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to fall hazards due to the improper maintenance of the ride steps on rear loading refuse trucks: a) Garbage collection route, Water Street, Brownsville, PA 15147: On or about August 21, 2023, employees working as a throwers/helpers were exposed to a fall hazard while using the driver and passenger side ride steps on a 2013 McNeilus brand rear loader refuse truck (VIN 3BPZH78X4DF192413). The passenger side ride step was bent such that the usable (level) surface area for employees to stand on was restricted to approximately 200 square inches and one of two bolts used to secure the back side of the ride step to the vehicle was missing. The bent ride step and missing support bolt exposed the employees using the ride steps to a fall hazard. b) Jobsite, 1184 McClellandtown Road, McClellandtown, PA 15458: On or about August 24, 2023, employees working as a throwers/helpers were exposed to a fall hazard while using the driver side ride step on a rear loader refuse truck 726026 (PA plate ZSA1616). The driver's side ride step was missing one of two bolts used to secure the back side of the ride step to the vehicle was missing. The missing bolt exposed the employees using the driver side ride step to a fall hazard.
