29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. a) On or about September 13, 2021, no machine guarding was provided by the employer to protect employees from moving material coming off of rolls located at the primary unwind of the Davis Standard 12 foot Coater/ Laminator as they walked through the moving material in order to cut it with shears. Employees were exposed to a caught between hazard from the moving material and the intake rollers. b) On or about September 22, 2021, inadequate machine guarding was provided by the employer to protect employees from ingoing nip points between the rollers of the Davis Standard 12 foot Coater Laminator at Section B at the OP 190 panel in that employees had to put their hands and arms inside the mesh enclosure to spray silicone lubricant onto the moving rollers, and the railing in front of these rollers was inadequate to prevent employee exposure to the ingoing nip points. c) On or about September 22, 2021, no guarding was provided by the employer to protect employees from ingoing nip points between the rollers and the material of the Davis Standard 12 foot Coater Laminator at the intake rollers where the air guide is located.
