Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by an overturning truck crane and its load. At the jobsite at Schenectady International, an employee was struck by an overturning hydraulic truck crane (Gallion, Model 150EA, Serial # 10472) while walking or working near the crane. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to designate a person that will be responsible for determining and controlling safety as specified by paragraph 15-3.2.3-m of American National Standard, ANSI B30.15. His determinations shall be in accord with decisions such as position of load, boom location, ground support, travel route, and speed of movement. In addition, specified tire pressures shall be maintained. The boom shall be carried in line with the direction of motion. Sudden starts and stops must be avoided. Tag or restraint should be used to snub swinging of the load.
