Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: FALLING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falls from elevations of over 90 feet while performing work near the edge of an unprotected roof: (a) Location - 16 Middle Street, Lowell, MA: On or about August 13, 1997, an employee was exposed to a fall from elevations of over 90 feet while applying pesticide in areas adjacent to the unprotected perimeter of a roof. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard are the following: 1. Conduct a job hazard analysis to identify worksites where employees may be exposed to fall hazards. 2. Take positive measures to assure that fixed guardrails, barriers, safety harnesses and lanyards or other means. 3. Establish clear workrules addressing fall hazards, conduct training to communicate these policies, conduct self-inspections to encourage compliance, and enforce requirements as necessary.
