Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: CUTS
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to cuts, lacerations, broken bones, and contusions from a loose air hose without automatic closing valve or other means to secure the hose: a.Employees in the 130 Fabrication shop clean chips from "I" beams using an air hose manually held having only a one quarter turn ball valve to control the air flow. The pressure is 80 pounds and no other means for securing or stopping the hose is available should there be an in advertant dropping of the hose. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: Install a self closing "dead man" valve on the end of the hose or attach the hose to a vacuum system.
