Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: LIFTING
The alleged violations below have been grouped because they involve %% similar or related hazards that may increase the potential for injury resulting from an accident. Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The Employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) The employer had not establised nor conducted a training program to ensure that the crane operator and the designated individuals in charge of lifting operations were knowledgeable of and could demonstrate safe operating procedures of the Manitowoc 3900 crane used to unload and clean barges at the river facility on the Ohio River. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to establish and conduct a training program which consists of (but not limited to) practical exercises on how to read the load charts, correct rigging procedures for the load, daily inspection requirements and other operations common to the industry. Operator should be able to demonstrate safe operating procedures.
