Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) On or about February 23, 1994, and at times prior to that date, employees working in the paint building were exposed to the hazards of being struck by suspended loads due to inadequate training in the proper procedures to follow when placing slings on loads and then suspending them off the floor. One employee was critically injured when a suspended parts rack fell and struck the employee. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is: 1) To provide training on a more regular basis. Although training is provided annually, refresher training could be provided more frequently, possibly quarterly or in whatever timeframe would be adequate to ensure all employees are knowledgeable in the proper procedures to follow when placing sling and suspending
