Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: CRUSHING
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were ex- posed to the following: (a) In the Motor Department, employees working on and around the three material elevators were exposed to the hazards of being struck and/or crushed by material elevator cars that could fall and injure employees from lack of safety devices or improp- er design. Among other methods one feasible and useful method to correct these hazards is to install and operate freight (ma- terial) elevators in accordance with the American National Standards, Standard 17.1-1987 Safety Code for Elevators and Es- calators, Part II Machinery and Equipment for Electric Elevators to include but not be limited to the following essentials: (1) All freight (material elevators) must be engineered, de- signed to meet the above ANSI standards. (2) Must have spring, oil, or equivalent buffers - section 201. (3) Must have counerweights - section 202. (4) Must meet ANSI strength and deflection of elevator car enclusure walls - section 204.IC. (5) Must mee ANSI strength of doors, gates and their guide shoes, tracks and hangers - section 204.4F. (6) Must have car and counterweight wire rope safeties - section 205. (7) Must have speed governers - section 206. (8) Must meet capacity of loading - section 207.
