Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: STRUCK BY
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck by materials. a) Rte. 1, Chadds Ford, PA - A fatal injury occurred when an employee was struck by section of rail. As part of a railroad crossing reconstruction project, an approximately 110' piece of rail was being moved into place. During the movement, the rail became excessively bent. The rail came loose from the device that was holding it and snapped straight. An employee who was standing in the rail's path of travel was struck. Observed 10/07/96. ABATEMENT NOTE: ONE FEASIBLE MEANS OF ABATING THE HAZARD WOULD BE TO HAVE ALL EMPLOYEES NOT INVOLVED IN THE MOVEMENT OF THE RAIL ASSEMBLE IN A SAFE AREA. EACH EMPLOYEE SHOULD BE ACCOUNTED FOR BEFORE MOVEMENT BEGINS.T
