Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001A Hazard: CAUGHT
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of having part of their body caught between the moving elevator and the hoistway. A feasible and useful method to correct this hazard, among other methods is the installation of elevator car doors or gates that would prevent employees from having any part of their body outside the periphery of the elevator car unless the elevator car is within the landing zone and that were electrically interlocked to prevent the elevator car from moving unless the elevator car doors or gates are in the closed position: a) Facility: The freight elevator was not provided with suitable hoistway door(s) or gate(s) interlocked to prevent the elevator from moving when the door(s) or gate(s) are not in the closed position and so latched that they cannot be opened from the landing side unless the car is within the loading zone.
