Text For Citation: 01 Item/Group: 001 Hazard:
OSH ACT of 1970 Section (5)(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were allowed to have direct contact with apex predators such as Black and Syrian Brown bears during sanitation and feeding: (a) Bear Enclosure: On or about August 16, 2013, an employee was exposed to potential attacks from captive bears while performing activities including, but not limited to sanitation of the enclosure and hand feeding. Among other possible methods to abate this violation, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazardous pratice would be to exclusively use the already installed cages that are directly connected to the holding/viewing area prior to allowing the employees to enter the holding area to clean them.
