29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc. On or about April 2, 2013, the following lathes were not were not provided with chuck guards; a) In the 240 Division Area, an employee was observed operating a Warner and Swasey horizontal lathe, Number 17, Lot 568. There was a mounted part spinning without a chuck guard in-place. b) In the Tool and Die Area, an Okuma lathe, serial number 4104-9514 was not equipped with a chuck guard. c) In the Tool and Die Area, a Monarch, model number B9204FLF2US was not equipped with a chuck guard. d) In the Tool and Die Area, a PBR TM30 was not equipped with a guard for the chuck. e) In the Tool and Die Area a Monarch, manufacturers # 25661 was not equipped with a guard for the chuck.
