Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recongized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a serious hazard from fugitive releases of flammable and combustible vapors and corrosive acid during the purging and repair of a condensor at the HF Alkylation Unit, 4/1/85. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard include: The improvement of the existing purging procedures to minimize the possibility of a release during maintenance by: a) purging each section of the unit separately; b) inspecting each section to ensure the effectiveness of the purging process.
