Nevada Revised Statute 618.375(1): Nevada Revised Statute 618.375(1): Duties of employers. Every employer shall furnish employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his or her employees. Employees performing procedures in the surgery room on small animals when anesthetic gas is used were found to be exposed to isoflurane in excess of the NIOSH exposure limit of 2 ppm. Personal and area air samples for isoflurane collected in the surgery room exceeded the 2 ppm recommended limit. The personal air sample resulted in an exposure level of 2.3 ppm. The area air sample collected in the surgery room resulted in an exposure level of 2.7 ppm. One feasible means of abatement would be to increase the air changes per hour in the room and increase the amount of fresh air provided, especially when anesthetic gas is used and during post operation recovery.
